The international history of Lopesan Hotel Group

From the Canary Islands to the end of the world

Like an ancient Canarian dragon tree, the Lopesan Group has woven, with its branches and roots, a vast history that crosses continents and connects people.  It all started with a tiny sprout in some fertile volcanic soil: the dedication of a Canarian family who could see beyond the horizon. That sprout, watered with dreams and determination, soon grew into a robust orchard. So, the Lopesan Hotel Group was set up – it's a company that's grown a lot over the years, has conquered new lands and become a true family tree, whose branches spread resolutely throughout Europe, Asia, and the American continent.

Lopesan found the perfect place to put down roots in Europe, the cradle of history and cultural diversity. The Canary Islands were a place where people could come and try new things, but still have a warm welcome. You could hear the sound of the waves, which made it clear that people there were passionate about tourism and excellence.

The Lopesan Group is always curious and believes that there's more than one way to understand hospitality. They think there are actually lots of different languages that come together to create understanding and sustainability. So, they've been exploring new ideas. They dream forward, planting values that grow across every border visited. So, it arrived in Asia, a place full of contrasts and inexhaustible light. I guess it's only natural, then, that a dream born by the sea would also want to feel the warmth of other shores, wouldn't it? It was clear that a lot of thought had gone into responsible tourism. There were initiatives to conserve biodiversity, support for local projects and respect for the identity of communities. And the well-being of those who come to enjoy a great vacation experience was always a priority.

Also, countries on the other side of the ocean, especially in the Caribbean, were really keen on the Lopesan Group's plans. There, under palm trees, new resorts and hotels popped up that embody the group's philosophy. The result was a setting where the beach became a testament to the balance between true pleasure and a profound respect for nature. We're always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact, support local jobs and work together with the community. If we go, it's to go well, right?

The vision of the Lopesan Hotel Group, reflected in each and every one of its actions, companies, projects, and establishments, is that of a future that doesn't destroy its own foundations, but rather strengthens them with energy efficiency programs, responsible water use, and local partnerships that drive economic and cultural development. Genuine value is recognized when, by adding a new element, something greater than the sum of all its parts is born. This is the secret that explains the history of Lopesan Hotel Group: a core of multiplied value that, since 1972, has expanded without losing the genesis of its beginnings. At that time, Hijos de Francisco López Sánchez marked the beginning of a dream that would continue to expand with each milestone.

Then in 1991, the group got their hands on the Altamarena in Fuerteventura apartments, which set the ball rolling on their hotel expansion. Then, in 1995, Lopesan Hotels & Resorts came along, showing how a vision can be brought to life, brick by brick. Things really picked up when Hotel Buenaventura and Hotel Catarina joined the fray in 1996. It was like everything fell into place, and the synergy between them brought out unexpected potential.

Since it was first established, Lopesan Hotel Group has been building a reputation for itself that's as steady as the sea and as strong as the wind. The Lopesan Costa Meloneras was the first hotel built entirely by its owners, and it opened in 2000. But it wouldn't be the last. A little later, the Villa del Conde brought the elegance of Canarian architecture, while the Baobab opened the doors to an exotic and wild world. Then, the echo of the Atlantic crossed the ocean, carrying it to the Caribbean, where Costa Bávaro became a symbol of expansion and creativity. The brand has evolved without losing its roots, embracing new goals, new territories, new souls. From Thailand to Madrid, each place they've taken over is another part of this living story, built with vision and commitment.

Founding of the company Hijos de Francisco López Sánchez, parent company of the current Lopesan Group
1991
The Lopesan Group purchases the Altamarena apartments in Fuerteventura.
1995
Lopesan Hotels & Resorts is established.
1996
The Lopesan Group purchases the Hotel Buenaventura and the Hotel Catarina from the German company Creativ.
1999
Acquisition of a majority stake in the capital of the IFA Hotels & Touristik group, later LS Invest AG.
2000
Opening of the first self-built hotel: Hotel Lopesan Costa Meloneras.
2003
The Lopesan Group purchases the Hotel Garonda Jandía in Fuerteventura, which is renamed Hotel Altamarena.
2004
Lopesan opens its second self-built hotel: Hotel Lopesan Villa del Conde.
2009
Lopesan opens its third self-built hotel: Hotel Lopesan Baobab.
2017
Lopesan Hotel Group increases its stake from 51% to 75% in LS Invest AG, following a capital increase.
2018
A new brand portfolio is created, introducing Abora by Lopesan Hotels and Corallium by Lopesan Hotels.
2019
Lopesan Hotel Group opens its fourth self-built hotel: Lopesan Costa Bávaro Resort, Spa & Casino.
2020
Presentation of The Lopesan Collection Hotels and Kumara by Lopesan Hotels brands.
2022
Acquisition of the first hotel in Asia: Eden Beach Resort & Spa, a Lopesan Collection Hotel (Thailand).
2023
Creation of Lopesan Hotel Management (LHM).
2024
Acquisition of the Hotel Miguel Ángel in Madrid.

Are you familiar with Lopesan for Good?

Lopesan Hotel Group is committed to sustainability and is developing the Lopesan for Good programme, which aims to implement sustainable practices in all of its operations. A €50 million investment in renewable energy projects means that all electricity consumed now comes from clean sources.

In 2023, water consumption was reduced by 19%, and thanks to the Buffet Waste programme, food waste was reduced by 66.2% by 2024. Through collaborative efforts and continuous progress, the Finca de Veneguera, which has 83.34 hectares of its own crops, supplied the hotels with 1.7 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables, promoting sustainable and local food.
